Would You Let Me
03:21
|
|||
If I asked to lay you down
If I asked to stay around
If I asked to love you now
Would you let me?
Would you let me lay you down?
Would you let me stay around?
Would you let me love you now?
Would you let me?
Don’t think of me
As a wide-eyed wanderer
Nor as sightlessly led by the blind.
Don’t sweat, don’t fret for me.
I’m quite alright.
Think of me
Not as a gypsy, not a drifter.
I’m a healer and this is your remedy.
You got me under your skin,
Let your veins take me.
Would you let me?
Here we go again
Same old sound, same old sin.
I got these roots in my blood.
This time
What I bite, I’ll chew
And I am hungry for something new.
I’ll payback what I stole.
I’ll make up for all that I owe.
I’ll mend, I’ll tend to you.
I’ll soothe your sorrowed soul
So would you let me?

Breathin' Steady
03:18
|
|||
Spin ‘round
In wheat and rye
The harvest is on your mind
Through give and take
The only gift I give is heartache
Spin ‘round
In fields of rye
The devil is by your side
Through give and take
Don’t you know
No you can’t break my step
Or take my breath away
Breathe steady baby, I’m breathing steady babe
No armor of gold
No help to carry my load away
My heart ain’t heavy baby, my heart ain’t heavy babe

So it Goes
04:43
|
|||
Old man, tell me how this ends.
He felt the tears run down his face
Until they reached where he could taste the grief.
Lost, lover lost. Sinking at her wake.
But he stayed afloat and said,
“So it goes, so it goes, so it goes on…and so on.”
“I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know where time’s gone.”
Daughter, how will this all shape out?
Overlooking heart, and
Tracing body parts for which she thirsts.
Not quite fit for him, but fit for better days.
She got up and said,
“So it goes, so it goes, so it goes on…and so on.”
“I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know where time’s gone.”
So young man, how will you play it out?
Looking under microscopes,
Diluting all the hope when it goes bad.
Let able arms carry you on.
Carry you on.
Get up and say,
“So it goes, so it goes, so it goes on…and so on.”
“I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know where time’s gone.”

Turn to Dust
03:05
|
|||
As our young brothers turn to dust
He begged his children “call it off.”
Forgive us now our father, for you have left us here to fight.
So we will fight.
Come by at the dark hour,
You’ll find us howling at the moon.
Masked in the earth beneath us,
Covered with dark they’ll hear our cries.

Radical
03:54
|
|||
Oh brother the things you’ve seen
Are all your eyes know.
And oh brother the things you’ve heard
It’s all noise.
And so it goes dear brother,
Insight in sense.
Oh brother what you know is
Half what’s true.
It’s radical, radical.
I still got a ways to get going
(I’m a long way from where I’ve been)
And I’ll be met by all I know
(Ain’t that right)
Oh sister you’ve held your faith
In what’s been written down.
And oh sister all that poetry
Principles from pros.
And so it goes dear sister,
No book knows truth.
So sister what you know is
Half what’s true.

Coming Down
03:11
|
|||
Don’t know why a little bit of somber
Makes my words fall through me
Or how a little bit of sober
Makes it hard to speak.
But I got a little bit of something
And it’s growing deep inside of me.
I’ll take that little bit of something,
Lift me up, get you down on your knees.
No I ain’t coming down you can come around to me.
Now I’ve heard a little bit of heartbreak
Can help the vain find humility.
And I’ve seen a little bit of sickness
Rid a man of his greed.
But I got a little bit of something
And it’s growing deep inside of me.
I’ll take that little bit of something
Lift me up, get you down on your knees.
No I ain’t coming down you can come around to me.
I’m high, yeah.
No I ain’t coming down.
You can come around to me.

New Orleans
03:36
|
|||
This old car, running through the night
You’re my company in the flash of headlights.
My body aches, oh I haven’t slept for days
But the thought of you is keeping me awake.
One more drink was as long as I’d stay
When you sat by me and asked for my name.
You told me of how you came and how you went
A stranger that night, a night well spent.
Six days now since New Orleans
Wish I could go back, but the road’s got me.
My memories and the letters that I wrote
Could never compare to that first night we spoke.
I read those words and the letters that you sent
Of all the places you’d been and all the people you’d met.
And in those notes you made sure to let me know
Where you would be next and hoped that I’d go.
(And I hoped that you’d go)
Took up leave
(Could not believe)
To where we’d meet
(You were here with me)
Here with me
(You were here with me)
This old car, running through the night
You’re my company in the flash of headlights.
Long time gone since we met that day
Now the warmth of you is keeping me awake.
Six years now since New Orleans
We were worlds apart, you stood by me.
We’ll tell them of how we came and how we went
Down endless highways, a life well spent.

Fit for Better Days
04:19
|
|||
Come walk with me where I laid my heart in the street
Beating next to my will and my only certainty.
Where you’ll want what you got and will fight for what’s not
And before long you’ll see
That I made my home with whom I have found company
For fear is so sweet and my dear there she kneels
She begs me to stay.
Cursing the wind and the falling rain that takes me away.
No, no, no sweet-talker could keep me longer than a cloud can keep its shape
But I’ve got some dreams and memories fit for the better days.
Come run with me, let your bare feet hit these beaten streets.
We can live off the land, with a wanderer’s hand
We’ll hold all that we need.
No direction ain’t what we’re aiming for my dear.
What good is direction when what you’re looking for is already here?
We are home now. We are home now.

Songbird
04:39
|
|||
The sparrow she weeps, wakes the tired from sleep at dawn.
But every good songbird needs a ballad to sing – this is her’s.
And though she is mourning, though she is mourning the night
Let it be morning. Let it morning, my love.
And she’ll fly away
Leave you lying awake
Fly away
Awake.
Straight ahead, canvas purple and red, sets the night.
Silence will fall like a veil over all as we part.
And though you’ll be mourning, though you’ll be mourning the light
Wait for the morning. Wait for the morning, my love.
It will rise.
We’ll let day break.
Rise,
The day.
The sparrow returned wearing feather both tempted and tried.
Her breath marked my words, got them caught in my throat with a sigh.
She taught me of love and of passion, of heart, and desire.
She said all we need is someone who we seek to inspire.
So keep me in mind.
It’s hard to keep down these feelings - they swell in my tongue.
But every good songbird needs a ballad to sing – this is mine.
And though I am mourning, though I am mourning the night
Let it be morning. Let it be morning, my love.

Starving Heart
03:59
|
|||
I’m free [from]
Swallowing words they feed
Relieve
The altar from which they preach
Deceit
Lies in the lullabies they sing
Judge me
Dishonesty between clenched teeth
A starving heart
A brother hiding in the dark
A naked eye
A sea of sons beneath the sky
Forsaken
Mistake the act for lack of faith
Judge me
Minds marked by insecurity
Believe me
A starving heart my words can feed
So let’s see
The handsome waters flowing free
Let’s see
The handsome waters flowing free
You brought this on your self.
Does it make you feel good?
You pushed your brother down.
Does it make you feel good?
His face upon the ground,
Does it make you feel good?
You brought this on your self.
Does it make you feel good?
Does it make you feel good?

Undone
03:11
|
|||
Sipping on whiskey while I wait
I’m looking sharp but hardly look my age.
A share of words, exchange of names.
Smooth talk don’t stop and he’s got me saying
I’ve come undone.
Undone.
He comes home late, doesn’t say a thing.
His staggered step tells me where he’s been.
Lipstick stained shirt, his hands on my waist.
Despite what he’s done he’s still got me saying
I’ve come undone.
Undone.
He’s gonna love me,
He’s gonna break me.
He’s gonna love me,
He’s gonna break me.
He’s gonna love me,
He’s gonna break me,
He’s gonna love me
Until I’ve come undone.
Until I’ve come undone.
